The World of Jan Vermeer - Lecture by Roman Grigoryev (Russian)
On January 28th the Bauhaus Center will host a new lecture by Roman Grigoryev this time he will delve into the world of Jan Vermeer!Roman Grigoriev is an art scientist, custodian of Dutch engraving in the Hermitage (1992-2022) and a professor at the European University in St. Petersburg (2000 to 2023).Let's talk about an artist, loved and appreciated by contemporaries - residents of Delft and the Netherlands, but who never achieved popularity compared to the Flemish Rubens or his countryman Rembrandt.Let's learn about the oddities of the biography of a man who spent his whole century in his hometown, who did not go to Italy like 99% of his colleagues, died in poverty and left a widow with a lot of debts and several paintings. Let's talk about the fates of the canvases themselves, let's try to understand for whom they were created as an artist, and how they were perceived, in other words - "read".Who is the girl with the pearl earring? Is it true Vermeer's maid, as the creators of the movie with Scarlett Johansson are trying to convince us, or is it not a portrait of a real person at all? And in general, is this a pearl earring? Who else wore such earrings, and what happened to the painting 350 years after its creation. We will talk about issues of Faith in the Republic of the United States and related paintings by Vermeer. When: January 28, 2023 18:00Where: 77 Dizegof Tel AvivThe price is 80 NISLanguage : RussianTo register for the lecture, write to: events@bauhaus-center.com

100 Years Vkhutemas Moscow – Revolution, Art and Architecture – (due to Covid19 pandemic, the exhibition will be postponed)https://bauhaus-center.com/vkhutemas-100-years-art-architecture-exhibition/ Mon, 24 Feb 2020 11:59:41 +0000 https://bauhaus-center.com/?p=3971

In 2020, just a year after the inspiring 2019 events around the Bauhaus centenary, we celebrate the founding of the Russian Art And Architecture School of Vkhutemas 100 years ago. Historical and ideological parallels between the two schools are evident. Find out more about Vkhutemas below. Follow us on Facebook and sign up for our Newsletter to receive updates and an invitation to the opening of our exhibition honoring the 'Russian Bauhaus'.Both schools, Vkhutemas in Russia and Bauhaus in Germany, were founded after war and turmoil (First World War and Russian Revolution) and dedicated their work to the creation of a better future. The "lifespan" of both institutes was short: Vkhutemas was closed after only 10 years of existence, while the Bauhaus school lasted for 14 years; dictatorial regimes were the reason for the closing of both schools. - In contrast to the Bauhaus in Germany, no successor with the name Vkhutemas can be found in today's Russia.

Founded To Create A Better Future

During its existence, the Vkhutemas united the most creative contemporaries of the young Soviet Union; classical and modern art as well as architecture were taught with the aim of improving the living conditions of the masses. Ideological tensions emerged between adherents of the so-called "psychoanalytical" approach, which took into account psychological factors in art and architecture, and the "constructivist" approach, which reduced architecture to engineering.
Vkhutemas in Russian: ВХУТЕМАС Высшие художественно-технические мастерские (Wysschije Chudoschestwenno Technitscheskije Masterskije - in English: Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops)
100 years later, we stand amazed by the creativity, which found expression under the most difficult material conditions at this school. In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, creative pioneers approached their work with an admirable energy and positive attitude, in pursuit of the creation of a better future.New, daring paths were explored in art as well as in architecture. While El Lissitzky, Malevitch, Rodchenko and Kandinsky later became famous also in the western world, the oeuvre of great architects such as Ginzburg, Mijelnikov, the Vjesnin brothers and Ladowski achieved less global recognition. In times of political isolation, their architectural work and buildings rarely got attention except from the local public - while works of art could easily be transported to be presented all over the world and reach a wider international audience.

Vkhutemas 100 Exhibition at Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv

The exhibition of the Bauhaus Center shows the organizational structure and the different educational strands which characterized the education at the Vkhutemas. Based on the example of the work of Moise Ginzburg, the architectural innovations conveyed are demonstrated: the flat roof, the ribbon window, the renunciation of decorations without functions, pilotis etc. In addition to these formal elements, the program also includes content-related innovations: communal kitchens, laundry rooms or common rooms appeared in residential buildings; and workers’ clubs were planned as part of the cultural renewal.Using the revolutionary Narkomfin complex (1928-30) as a case study, the exhibition illustrates the careful restoration and adaptation of the building to today’s requirements. Two biographies of female students of the Vkhutemas school are part of the display. The last part of our documentary exhibition sheds light on the international reputation of the Vkhutemas.More details: Bauhaus Center Vkhutemas 100 exhibition >>

100 Years of Bauhaus – 20 Years of Bauhaus Center Tel Avivhttps://bauhaus-center.com/100-years-bauhaus-tel-aviv-preview/ Thu, 01 Nov 2018 12:52:57 +0000 https://bauhaus-center.com/?p=2337

In 2019 the Bauhaus School in Germany celebrates its 100th anniversary. The Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv is proud to participate with its own exhibition abroad and in Tel Aviv, marking the centenary - and also the 20th anniversary of the Center itself.

100 Years - The History of Bauhaus in Germany & Israel

In 2019, the Bauhaus School in Germany marks its 100th anniversary. Founded by Walter Gropius, and subsequently headed by Hannes Meyer and Mies van der Rohe, this school of design and architecture was closed when the Nazis took power in 1933, and many of its students and teachers left Germany — particularly, although not exclusively, all its Jewish members. In total, under the Nazi regime, approximately 60,000 Jews left Germany for Mandatory Palestine.Since many, if not most, of these immigrants came from urban backgrounds in Germany, they naturally sought to settle in a city in their new homeland. To accommodate them, thousands of dwellings had to be built in Tel Aviv. Dozens of architects were involved in this huge enterprise, six of whom were former Bauhaus students: Shlomo Bernstein, Munio Gitai-Weinraub, Shmuel Mestechkin, Chanan Frenkel, and Arieh Sharon - the beginning of the White City.In 2003 the White City of Tel Aviv was declared a World Heritage Site, by virtue of its very large number of modernist Bauhaus buildings that were constructed in the 1930s and 1940s. Today, half of these—around 2,000 buildings—are protected heritage sites.3 years before the White City of Tel Aviv was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, we established the Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv. The purpose of the center: to promote the architectural heritage of Tel-Aviv. Now in the year 100 of the Bauhaus we are happy to celebrate nearly two decades of publishing, tour-guiding and other activities ourselves.[caption id="attachment_2358" align="alignright" width="960"] Exhibition Opening in Essen. 100 Year Bauhaus Exhibition by Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv

The Tel Aviv Bauhaus Center participates in the 100 Year Bauhaus festivities in Germany with a special exhibition accompanied by a catalogue we edit and publish. The new show was presented for the first time to the German public in September 2018 in the "Alte Synagoge" Essen. The exhibition is presented in several additional venues in NRW in Germany (details on www.bauhaus100-im-westen.de). All exhibitions and festivities of the Bauhaus in Germany are listed on www.bauhaus100.de.Our own special Bauhaus 100 exhibition was also presented in a Hebrew/English version in the Gallery of the Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv from January 24, 2019.

20 Years of Bauhaus Center Retrospective

During the year of the Bauhaus Centers' anniversary a "retrospective" art show is planned, with of many of the artists collaborating with the Center during the last two decades. The exhibition about the revival of the Dizengoff Circle, or Dizengoff Square, is also a part of the Bauhaus Centers' festivities, as our Center held a show 8 years ago presenting renovation ideas for the iconic square, the "heart" of the White City of Tel Aviv.Just in time for the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus School, the city of Tel Aviv has successfully completed the restoration of Dizengoff Circus, designed by architect Genia Averbuch — likely the world’s only “Bauhaus Piazza” — to its original design. Regarded as the traditional center of the White City, it is striking for its simple design: a round space, surrounded by nearly identical buildings, featuring curvilinear horizontal slit balconies. The simple, elegant architectural language of this circle makes it a paradigm of local modernist architecture.Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv, located next to the renewed iconic Dizengoff Circus and happy taking part in the Bauhaus 100 festivities as well as celebrating Bauhaus Centers' 20th anniversary.]]>
