Tel Aviv in IndiaTo celebrate the establishment of diplomatic ties between Israel and India thirty years ago, the Israeli Consulate General in Mumbai organized an exhibition with the support of Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv; Sir JJ College of Architecture, Mumbai; and Art Deco Mumbai. Following the removal of COVID-19 restrictions, Bauhaus Tel Aviv has seen a rise in international interest, with new exhibitions in Georgia and in India

Tel Aviv in Georgia

To mark thirty years of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Israel, our exhibition Preservation and Renewal: Bauhaus and International Style Buildings in Tel Aviv has been held at various venues in Georgia.

The first opening was on May 10, 2022 at the Hotel Rooms Garden Hall, Tbilisi. This was a collaborative event between Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv; the Israeli Embassy in Georgia; the Tbilisi Center of Architecture, Design and Creative Industries; and Domus Georgia. The exhibition featured two public lectures, held at Georgian Technical University and Hotel Stamba Conference Room, respectively. Local media (newspapers and television) reported on these events.

The World Celebrating Bauhaus 100

In 2019 Bauhaus celebrated its 100th anniversary and experienced an enormous boost of interest and attention all around the globe – and with it, the White City of Tel Aviv as the “world capital of Bauhaus buildings". The Bauhaus Center is proud to have formed an integral part of many festivities and events around the globe. Just in time for the centenary of Bauhaus, the city of Tel Aviv completed the restoration of the world’s only “Bauhaus Piazza”, the Dizengoff Circle. We reviewed the history of this famous public square and centerpiece of the White City, and celebrated its successful renewal with our Dizengoff Circle exhibition from June 2019.

Bauhaus Center Abroad

In context of the Bauhaus100 festivities, we were also invited to show our exhibitions and to speak at conferences and public events all around the globe, telling the story of Tel Avivs experience with Bauhaus and in particular the work of the Bauhaus Center.One highlight was the exhibition “New Building in Germany and Mandatory Palestine – 100 Years of Bauhaus” that we developed in collaboration with Moses Mendelsohn Zentrum in Potsdam and Alte Synagoge Essen. This exhibition was shown around Germany and in Tel Aviv, and honored the work of Josef Rings and Erich Mendelsohn in Germany and in mandatory Palestine.

Bauhaus Center Exhibitions Shown Around The World

During the whole year, our “Preservation and Renewal” exhibition visited many places around the globe: Italy, Ulm, Miami, to mention a few; and Novi Sad, the European Capital of Culture 2021, where Dr. Micha Gross presented the Bauhaus Center’s work and research in a workshop and a public lecture at the local university.[caption id="attachment_3816" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Bauhaus Center's Co-Founder Dr Micha Gross at the Freiraum Berlin[/caption]In cooperation with the Bauhaus Center, Freiraum Berlin hosted an exhibition “Berlin: Wohnungsfrage und Freiraum – Bauhaus und die Moderne in Berlin und Tel Aviv”, where Dr. Micha Gross took part in the discourse on the social context of architecture.Moscow celebrated the anniversary of the Bauhaus movement with the exhibition “Bauhaus. The White City of Tel Aviv”, in which the Bauhaus Center and Dr. Micha Gross participated. Many other events and exhibitions - from the US and Europe all the way to Hong Kong - were able to awaken the interest of a wide audience for the fascinating character and history of the Bauhaus school.

Media Featuring Bauhaus Around The World

In between exhibitions and lectures our center received numerous requests from media-outlets from around the world. The Bauhaus Center was featured in leading journals and newspapers all around the world. The New York Times informed about the White City in Tel Aviv and did not forget to mention the Bauhaus Center; a feature in the prestigious Architectural Digest AD took the Bauhaus Center to the pinnacle of architectural journalism; and the National Geographic recommended visiting Tel Aviv and recommended the White City Bauhaus Tour as the best way to experience Bauhaus.From Germany to Indonesia and from China to the US – newspapers, magazines and TV stations took interest in Bauhaus. And the Bauhaus Center as a center of knowledge and proficiency was happy to inform and to help spread the word about this fascinating movement that started a hundred years ago.

We are confident that the timeless Bauhaus design and architecture will continue to inspire people around the world, and we will keep up our work in documenting and representing the Tel Aviv White City through our Bauhaus Tours and gallery in the Center in Tel Aviv, and with our traveling Bauhaus Exhibitions and participation in conferences around the world. Global Learning: Bauhaus Center visiting Hong Kong

Past week Bauhaus Center's Dr. Micha Gross had the privilege to lecture and present our research and experience with Bauhaus in Tel Aviv at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The university's 3-day event celebrated the opening of the exhibition "From the Bauhaus: visions, design and technology" co-organized by HKUST Division of Integrative Systems and Design (ISD) and Office of Global Learning (OGL). Three thematic design lectures showcased the Bauhaus influence to today and future. Dr Micha Gross focused in his lecture about Conservation of the Bauhaus Architecture on the topic of Bauhaus and Society.Also in this context, the university's Luisa Mok produced this 30 minute documentary with interviews focusing on the Bauhaus Center's significance and interpretation today, 100 years after the Bauhaus School's inception.We are proud to present our research and exhibitions regularly in museums, academic institutions and other venues around the world. Exhibition Opening in Berlin: Cooperation With ‘Freiraum Berlin’ Gallery

How do we want to live? This question was of eminent importance for a new, democratic society emerging in Berlin in the 1920s and 1930s – and today, we are asking the same question again. The Bauhaus Center is proud to present a new exhibition that displays the manifestations of Modernism (and Bauhaus in particular) in Berlin and Tel Aviv, in cooperation with the Freiraum Berlin gallery.

Back in the early 20th century, the (visual) ideas of Modernism and Bauhaus in particular, developed a concept for a new way of living together. Developed by architects, artists, designers, philosophers, the breakthrough materialized in Berlin only in limited scope, as society was not ready for the new aesthetic and approach.

But a few years later in Tel Aviv, 4000 explicitly modern objects were created in an architectonic manifestation of the new, open, social society. Built in the image of European modernism, Tel Aviv became a powerful demonstration of an alliance between the new and the old, the combination of renewal and tradition. Until today, the White City stands for the re-interpretation of the past in a thoroughly modern way – an epitome also of the title of Herzl’s book Altneuland.

The Bauhaus Center Team is happy to cooperate with the Freiraum Berlin Gallery for this new exhibition with photographs by Jean Molitor. A beautiful display of the Modernism ideas - and Bauhaus architecture in particular - exiled from Germany in the 20th century, an idea with such a massive impact around the world and especially in Tel Aviv.

The Reflections of Bauhaus In The Modernization of Novi Sad

“The Modernization of Novi Sad: Reflections of Bauhaus” is a project initiated within the setting of the “European Capital of Culture Novi Sad 2021 – The Future of Europe”. In a variety of formats and events, it shows the influence of Bauhaus and promotes awareness and appreciation for the modernist heritage of Novi Sad. The Bauhaus Center is proud to be a part of this project.

The involvement of the Bauhaus Center's founder Dr. Micha Gross in this project was twofold: Firstly, the traveling exhibition “Preservation and Renewal: Bauhaus and International Style Buildings in Tel Aviv” was incorporated in the program of “The Modernisation of Novi Sad”. Showing dozens of objects built in the 1930s in Tel Aviv, which were rebuilt in close cooperation of the City of Tel Aviv and UNESCO, this exhibition gives insight into the reconstruction process of the architectural heritage in Tel Aviv - and can possibly serve as inspiration for the preservation of modernist heritage in Novi Sad.

Workshop "Walks through Modern Novi Sad"

Secondly, Dr. Gross shared his knowledge and skills in the workshop “Walks through Modern Novi Sad”, giving suggestions and advice to attending students. Referring to the issue of preservation and restoration of architectural heritage, Dr. Gross emphasized the importance of adequate legal regulations and close cooperation between city leaders, experts such as conservators and architects and the UNESCO. High quality results can only be achieved through full adherence to regulations and expert advice. The foundations of this process should be established by thorough research projects such as mapping and recording of all objects with significance to the modernist heritage of the City.

Developing the cultural identity of a city.

Experiences of Tel Aviv, a city with about 4,000 objects referring to modernity and Bauhaus, can be significant for other cities with rich modernist heritage, such as Novi Sad. The traveling exhibition on display as well as our catalog and many other public relations activities and touristic offerings, accompany the renovation and renewal process in Tel Aviv. All these measures have instilled a change in perception, and a new cultural identity has developed. The former lack of interest and knowledge has been replaced through pride and identification with the “White City”. Drawing interest and gaining support from the citizens for private and public investment in the cause is crucial for any city development plan. We look forward to a potential future Tel Aviv - Novi Sad cooperation!

The Museum of Architecture named after A.V. Schuseva hosted the exhibition “Bauhaus. The White City of Tel Aviv”, organized by the General Planning Institute of Moscow, the Bauhaus Center of Tel Aviv and the Israel Cultural Center to celebrate the anniversary of the movement. Novi Sad was named the European Capital of Culture for 2021. In this capacity, it celebrates 100 years of Bauhaus with a program called “Future of Europe” and will host the exhibition “Preservation And Renewal: Bauhaus And International Style Buildings”. In 2019 the Bauhaus School in Germany celebrates its 100th anniversary. The Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv is proud to participate with its own exhibition abroad and in Tel Aviv, marking the centenary - and also the 20th anniversary of the Center itself.

100 Years - The History of Bauhaus in Germany & Israel

In 2019, the Bauhaus School in Germany marks its 100th anniversary. Founded by Walter Gropius, and subsequently headed by Hannes Meyer and Mies van der Rohe, this school of design and architecture was closed when the Nazis took power in 1933, and many of its students and teachers left Germany — particularly, although not exclusively, all its Jewish members. In total, under the Nazi regime, approximately 60,000 Jews left Germany for Mandatory Palestine.Since many, if not most, of these immigrants came from urban backgrounds in Germany, they naturally sought to settle in a city in their new homeland. To accommodate them, thousands of dwellings had to be built in Tel Aviv. Dozens of architects were involved in this huge enterprise, six of whom were former Bauhaus students: Shlomo Bernstein, Munio Gitai-Weinraub, Shmuel Mestechkin, Chanan Frenkel, and Arieh Sharon - the beginning of the White City.In 2003 the White City of Tel Aviv was declared a World Heritage Site, by virtue of its very large number of modernist Bauhaus buildings that were constructed in the 1930s and 1940s. Today, half of these—around 2,000 buildings—are protected heritage sites.3 years before the White City of Tel Aviv was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, we established the Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv. The purpose of the center: to promote the architectural heritage of Tel-Aviv. 100 Year Bauhaus Exhibition by Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv

The Tel Aviv Bauhaus Center participates in the 100 Year Bauhaus festivities in Germany with a special exhibition accompanied by a catalogue we edit and publish. The new show was presented for the first time to the German public in September 2018 in the "Alte Synagoge" Essen. The exhibition is presented in several additional venues in NRW in Germany (details on www.bauhaus100-im-westen.de). 20 Years of Bauhaus Center Retrospective

During the year of the Bauhaus Centers' anniversary a "retrospective" art show is planned, with of many of the artists collaborating with the Center during the last two decades. The exhibition about the revival of the Dizengoff Circle, or Dizengoff Square, is also a part of the Bauhaus Centers' festivities, as our Center held a show 8 years ago presenting renovation ideas for the iconic square, the "heart" of the White City of Tel Aviv.Just in time for the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus School, the city of Tel Aviv has successfully completed the restoration of Dizengoff Circus, designed by architect Genia Averbuch — likely the world’s only “Bauhaus Piazza” — to its original design. Regarded as the traditional center of the White City, it is striking for its simple design: a round space, surrounded by nearly identical buildings, featuring curvilinear horizontal slit balconies. The simple, elegant architectural language of this circle makes it a paradigm of local modernist architecture.Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv, located next to the renewed iconic Dizengoff Circus and happy taking part in the Bauhaus 100 festivities as well as celebrating Bauhaus Centers' 20th anniversary.
