The wide variety of building types solidified in Bat Yam during the first few decades resembles a pastiche of architectural catalogs. Over the years, Bat Yam has provided space for Israeli social and architectural experimentation. Under the city's overarching blueprint, Zionism's narrative unfolded, and so did the everyday tales of city life. Massive investments in real estate in the last decade and effervescent plans for urban regeneration highlight the need to formulate Bat Yam's unique urban narrative and examine how the elusive Bat Yam character expresses itself. Now is the time to think of Bat Yam as a fascinating place derivative of the Zionist project. It is the right time to think of Bat Yam and cities like it as the front room of Israeli residence, as a display of needs, actions, and the forces at play. It's time to think of Bat Yam as prose.Dr. Daphna Levine is an architect and urban renewal researcher. As director of the strategic planning department in the Bat Yam municipality, she led the city's conservation plan; this book is the product of this fascinating endeavor.

בת ים, שנולדה בשנות ה-20 של המאה העשרים, שימשה לאורך השנים שדה פורה לניסויים חברתיים ואדריכליים בישראל, ומגוון טיפוסי הבנייה שנוצקו אליה הותכו יחדיו למעין קטלוג אדריכלי. תחת שרביט התכנון ובאמצעותו נרקמו הסיפורים הגדולים של הציונות, כמו גם הסיפורים האנושיים הקטנים של חיי היום־יום, ופרחה עיר שכל רצונה הוא להיות היא עצמה: להתגלש על גג הבטון של עמיגור, לרוץ באימה לאורכו של בית חולים הגפן, להתגלגל בדיונות, להתנשק בקולנוע העצמאות.

לנוכח ההשקעות המסיביות בנדל"ן והפופולריות הגוברת של תוכניות ההתחדשות העירונית בעשור האחרון, עולה הצורך לגבש את הסיפור העירוני הייחודי של העיר ולברר מהו בדיוק הדבר ה"בת־ימי" החמקמק הזה; מה בהיסטוריה הבנויה של בת ים ראוי לשימור וממה אפשר להיפרד למען פיתוח והתחדשות. זו העת לשאול מהו הסיפור שבת ים רוצה לספר; זו העת לחשוב את בת ים כפרוזה.

Many of the great Bauhaus architects, including Arieh Sharon and Shlomo Bernstein, fled the Nazis in the ’30s and landed here; the Bauhaus quarter – where many of these buildings are concentrated – was named a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2003 and it’s one of the largest collections of this architectural style anywhere in the world. Tel Aviv in IndiaTo celebrate the establishment of diplomatic ties between Israel and India thirty years ago, the Israeli Consulate General in Mumbai organized an exhibition with the support of Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv; Sir JJ College of Architecture, Mumbai; and Art Deco Mumbai. Following the removal of COVID-19 restrictions, Bauhaus Tel Aviv has seen a rise in international interest, with new exhibitions in Georgia and in India

To mark thirty years of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Israel, our exhibition Preservation and Renewal: Bauhaus and International Style Buildings in Tel Aviv has been held at various venues in Georgia.

The first opening was on May 10, 2022 at the Hotel Rooms Garden Hall, Tbilisi. This was a collaborative event between Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv; the Israeli Embassy in Georgia; the Tbilisi Center of Architecture, Design and Creative Industries; and Domus Georgia. The exhibition featured two public lectures, held at Georgian Technical University and Hotel Stamba Conference Room, respectively. Local media (newspapers and television) reported on these events.

100 Years Vkhutemas Moscow – Revolution, Art and Architecture – (due to Covid19 pandemic, the exhibition will be postponed)

In 2020, just a year after the inspiring 2019 events around the Bauhaus centenary, we celebrate the founding of the Russian Art And Architecture School of Vkhutemas 100 years ago. Historical and ideological parallels between the two schools are evident. Find out more about Vkhutemas below. Follow us on Facebook and sign up for our Newsletter to receive updates and an invitation to the opening of our exhibition honoring the 'Russian Bauhaus'.Both schools, Vkhutemas in Russia and Bauhaus in Germany, were founded after war and turmoil (First World War and Russian Revolution) and dedicated their work to the creation of a better future. The "lifespan" of both institutes was short: Vkhutemas was closed after only 10 years of existence, while the Bauhaus school lasted for 14 years; dictatorial regimes were the reason for the closing of both schools. - In contrast to the Bauhaus in Germany, no successor with the name Vkhutemas can be found in today's Russia.

Founded To Create A Better Future

During its existence, the Vkhutemas united the most creative contemporaries of the young Soviet Union; classical and modern art as well as architecture were taught with the aim of improving the living conditions of the masses. Ideological tensions emerged between adherents of the so-called "psychoanalytical" approach, which took into account psychological factors in art and architecture, and the "constructivist" approach, which reduced architecture to engineering.

Vkhutemas in Russian: ВХУТЕМАС Высшие художественно-технические мастерские (Wysschije Chudoschestwenno Technitscheskije Masterskije - in English: Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops)

100 years later, we stand amazed by the creativity, which found expression under the most difficult material conditions at this school. In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, creative pioneers approached their work with an admirable energy and positive attitude, in pursuit of the creation of a better future.New, daring paths were explored in art as well as in architecture. While El Lissitzky, Malevitch, Rodchenko and Kandinsky later became famous also in the western world, the oeuvre of great architects such as Ginzburg, Mijelnikov, the Vjesnin brothers and Ladowski achieved less global recognition. In times of political isolation, their architectural work and buildings rarely got attention except from the local public - while works of art could easily be transported to be presented all over the world and reach a wider international audience.

Vkhutemas 100 Exhibition at Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv

The exhibition of the Bauhaus Center shows the organizational structure and the different educational strands which characterized the education at the Vkhutemas. Based on the example of the work of Moise Ginzburg, the architectural innovations conveyed are demonstrated: the flat roof, the ribbon window, the renunciation of decorations without functions, pilotis etc. In addition to these formal elements, the program also includes content-related innovations: communal kitchens, laundry rooms or common rooms appeared in residential buildings; and workers’ clubs were planned as part of the cultural renewal.Using the revolutionary Narkomfin complex (1928-30) as a case study, the exhibition illustrates the careful restoration and adaptation of the building to today’s requirements. Two biographies of female students of the Vkhutemas school are part of the display.
