The "lifespan" of both institutes was short: Vkhutemas was closed after only 10 years of existence, while the Bauhaus school lasted for 14 years; dictatorial regimes were the reason for the closing of both schools. - In contrast to the Bauhaus in Germany, no successor with the name Vkhutemas can be found in today's Russia.

Founded To Create A Better Future

During its existence, the Vkhutemas united the most creative contemporaries of the young Soviet Union; classical and modern art as well as architecture were taught with the aim of improving the living conditions of the masses. Ideological tensions emerged between adherents of the so-called "psychoanalytical" approach, which took into account psychological factors in art and architecture, and the "constructivist" approach, which reduced architecture to engineering.

100 years later, we stand amazed by the creativity, which found expression under the most difficult material conditions at this school. In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, creative pioneers approached their work with an admirable energy and positive attitude, in pursuit of the creation of a better future.New, daring paths were explored in art as well as in architecture. While El Lissitzky, Malevitch, Rodchenko and Kandinsky later became famous also in the western world, the oeuvre of great architects such as Ginzburg, Mijelnikov, the Vjesnin brothers and Ladowski achieved less global recognition. In times of political isolation, their architectural work and buildings rarely got attention except from the local public - while works of art could easily be transported to be presented all over the world and reach a wider international audience.

Vkhutemas 100 Exhibition at Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv

The exhibition of the Bauhaus Center shows the organizational structure and the different educational strands which characterized the education at the Vkhutemas. Based on the example of the work of Moise Ginzburg, the architectural innovations conveyed are demonstrated: the flat roof, the ribbon window, the renunciation of decorations without functions, pilotis etc. In addition to these formal elements, the program also includes content-related innovations: communal kitchens, laundry rooms or common rooms appeared in residential buildings; and workers’ clubs were planned as part of the cultural renewal.Using the revolutionary Narkomfin complex (1928-30) as a case study, the exhibition illustrates the careful restoration and adaptation of the building to today’s requirements. Two biographies of female students of the Vkhutemas school are part of the display. In 2019 Bauhaus celebrated its 100th anniversary and experienced an enormous boost of interest and attention all around the globe – and with it, the White City of Tel Aviv as the “world capital of Bauhaus buildings". The Bauhaus Center is proud to have formed an integral part of many festivities and events  around the globe. Just in time for the centenary of Bauhaus, the city of Tel Aviv completed the restoration of the world’s only “Bauhaus Piazza”, the Dizengoff Circle. We reviewed the history of this famous public square and centerpiece of the White City, and celebrated its successful renewal with our Dizengoff Circle exhibition from June 2019.

Bauhaus Center Abroad

In context of the Bauhaus100 festivities, we were also invited to show our exhibitions and to speak at conferences and public events all around the globe, telling the story of Tel Avivs experience with Bauhaus and in particular the work of the Bauhaus Center.One highlight was the exhibition “New Building in Germany and Mandatory Palestine – 100 Years of Bauhaus” that we developed in collaboration with Moses Mendelsohn Zentrum in Potsdam and Alte Synagoge Essen. This exhibition was shown around Germany and in Tel Aviv, and honored the work of Josef Rings and Erich Mendelsohn in Germany and in mandatory Palestine.

Many other events and exhibitions - from the US and Europe all the way to Hong Kong - were able to awaken the interest of a wide audience for the fascinating character and history of the Bauhaus school.

In between exhibitions and lectures our center received numerous requests from media-outlets from around the world. The Bauhaus Center was featured in leading journals and newspapers all around the world. The New York Times informed about the White City in Tel Aviv and did not forget to mention the Bauhaus Center; a feature in the prestigious Architectural Digest AD took the Bauhaus Center to the pinnacle of architectural journalism; and the National Geographic recommended visiting Tel Aviv and recommended the White City Bauhaus Tour as the best way to experience Bauhaus.From Germany to Indonesia and from China to the US – newspapers, magazines and TV stations took interest in Bauhaus. And the Bauhaus Center as a center of knowledge and proficiency was happy to inform and to help spread the word about this fascinating movement that started a hundred years ago.

How do we want to live? This question was of eminent importance for a new, democratic society emerging in Berlin in the 1920s and 1930s – and today, we are asking the same question again. The Bauhaus Center is proud to present a new exhibition that displays the manifestations of Modernism (and Bauhaus in particular) in Berlin and Tel Aviv, in cooperation with the Freiraum Berlin gallery.

Back in the early 20th century, the (visual) ideas of Modernism and Bauhaus in particular, developed a concept for a new way of living together. Developed by architects, artists, designers, philosophers, the breakthrough materialized in Berlin only in limited scope, as society was not ready for the new aesthetic and approach.

But a few years later in Tel Aviv, 4000 explicitly modern objects were created in an architectonic manifestation of the new, open, social society. Built in the image of European modernism, Tel Aviv became a powerful demonstration of an alliance between the new and the old, the combination of renewal and tradition. Until today, the White City stands for the re-interpretation of the past in a thoroughly modern way – an epitome also of the title of Herzl’s book Altneuland.

The Bauhaus Center Team is happy to cooperate with the Freiraum Berlin Gallery for this new exhibition with photographs by Jean Molitor. A beautiful display of the Modernism ideas - and Bauhaus architecture in particular - exiled from Germany in the 20th century, an idea with such a massive impact around the world and especially in Tel Aviv.

During the summer months the exhibition is on display in Box Freiraum Berlin Gallery, and we are looking forward to hosting the Jean Molitor exhibition BAUHAUS AND MODERNISM IN BERLIN AND TEL AVIV in our Bauhaus Center Gallery later in 2019. The Museum of Architecture named after A.V. Schuseva hosted the exhibition “Bauhaus. The White City of Tel Aviv”, organized by the General Planning Institute of Moscow, the Bauhaus Center of Tel Aviv and the Israel Cultural Center to celebrate the anniversary of the movement. We are proud to contribute to the Bauhaus100 celebration in Germany and all around the globe. The Bauhaus Center partners with the University of Potsdam and the Jewish Museum Essen to curate a new exhibition and to publish a new Bauhaus Center book for the centenary in 2019.The Bauhaus School in Germany will celebrate its centenary in 2019 with highly publicized events in Germany and all over the globe. The Bauhaus became a symbol for modernism in architecture and design, and it represents the democratic spirit of Germany in the "Weimarer Republik". After 1933 when the Bauhaus was closed and many of its members and students left Germany, some of them relocated to Palestine-Israel.The Bauhaus Center was invited to contribute to the centenary events with an exhibition of its own, of two architects who were well known in Germany until they emigrated to Palestine: Josef Rings and Erich Mendelsohn (architect known amongst other works for the famous Weizmann House in Rechovot, Israel). Our partners for the exhibition are Dr. Ines Sonder from the University of Potsdam and Dr. Uri Kaufmann from the Jewish Museum "Alte Synagoge" Essen.

Bauhaus Center Exhibition on Tour in Germany in 2019

This coproduction will be shown in a number of places in Germany, with Essen as its first station. In Tel Aviv the special exhibition will be shown in the gallery space of the Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv.The title of the exhibition and the book will be 'Neues Bauen in Deutschland und Israel (Palestina): Josef Rings und Erich Mendelsohn'. With this presentation we will show how the modernist spirit as well as modern technical "know-how" was transferred from Germany to Israel (Palestine) after 1933.This project takes place during the Bauhaus100 year and it enjoys the support of the government of Rheinland-Westfalen as well as donations by private sponsors.]]>
