The photographer Rainer Raczinski presents modernism through the lens of its Polaroid instant picture camera in this exhibition in the Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv.Rainer Raczinski's Polaroids show urban landscapes. By using the Instant Camera, unique pictures are produced, based on the human visual perception. The photographer travels between three different locations - Los Angeles, Tel Aviv and Frankfurt.Frankfurt was an important site of the early modernism, whereas Los Angeles and Tel Aviv represent the later modernism. Many of the architects designing Tel Aviv and Los Angeles where of Jewish origin, trained either at the Bauhaus school itself or by teachers who taught at this institution. The presented photographs allow the viewer to experience similarity and fundamental differences between the three cities. One can see how decorations and functional features communicate in the same language in spite of the distances between the countries and the continents.Opening event: Thursday, 11.10.2018, 19:00. In the early years of the Bauhaus Center, we presented the exhibition and book: Revival of the Bauhaus in Tel Aviv: Renovation of the International Style in the White City, curated and edited by Shmuel Yavin.Conservation of the White City had just begun then, and seemed relevant mainly to professionals in the field. In time, the general public has also become interested in Tel Aviv’s modernist architecture and its conservation. Therefore, in 2015 we decided to produce an up-to-date exhibition, accompanied by a new book in a different format. In the exhibition and book Preservation and Renewal: Bauhaus and International Style Buildings in Tel Aviv color photographs present images of renovated buildings in the White City alongside historic photographs and architectural plans. The book's compact design allows one to peruse it while touring the city, next to the buildings themselves. It is our hope that all owners of buildings slated for preservation in Tel Aviv may be convinced of the feasibility of preserving their property, and that our next exhibition and book may present the entire White City as well preserved.

Carmel – International Style In Haifahttps://bauhaus-center.com/gallery-art-exhibition/carmel-international-style-in-haifa/ Thu, 13 Nov 2014 17:00:35 +0000 https://bauhaus-center.com/?post_type=nor-portfolio&p=1002

It is largely unknown today that a remarkable variety of buildings in the modernist International Style were constructed in the 1930s and 40s on the slopes of Mount Carmel in Haifa. Attention is too heavily focused on Israel’s ‘Bauhaus city’ of Tel Aviv. But the once highly praised situation of Haifa, with its unique panorama view of the Mediterranean, attracted the attention of architects, most of whom had emigrated from Europe. The city’s scenic charms and special climate became the projection surface of the avant-garde ideas and social utopias they brought with them.Haifa’s modernist building stock is now in a similar state to that of Tel Aviv in the 1990s, most of it having been insensitively extended and altered. With an unusual eye for stylistic detail and characteristics, Stephanie Kloss’s highly aesthetic photographs show Haifa’s valuable architectural heritage, which is threatened by alteration and decay and should be preserved. The photographs do not claim to be a complete survey and documentation, but show the buildings in their sculptural language, which embodies the optimistic mood of the era and defies the signs of the times.Stephanie Kloss, born in Karlsruhe (D), lives and works in Berlin (D).She graduated 1994 in architecture at TU Berlin and 1998 in photography/ media arts at HfG, Karlsruhe (D) with Candida Höfer and Marie-Jo Lafontaine. She received grants for residencies in:Caracas, (2007, Goethe Institute Venezuela), the Seaside Institude, Florida (USA), the working grant for visual arts Senate Berlin (2010/2011), a project grant of Goethe Institute Jerusalem, Israel (2012 ) and the Global grant of the Berlin Senate for Israel (2014).Her work was shown recently at:"Memory Lab", Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin (D), at Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden (D), 2014, in Berlin at Gallery September (2014), Gallery Neumeister Bar Am (2013), Gallery Laura Mars Grp.
