Instagram, 1938-style: Photos by Zoltan Kluger from Mandatory Palestinehttps://bauhaus-center.com/gallery-art-exhibition/1938-photos-zoltan-kluger-mandatory-palestine-instagram/ Wed, 24 Nov 2021 15:52:02 +0000 https://bauhaus-center.com/?post_type=nor-portfolio&p=4823

Two extraordinary photo albums were the starting point for this exhibition. One folder with 40 silver prints on cardboard of aerial photos from Palestine by Zoltan Kluger (1896–1977). It was edited by the businessman and publisher Salman Schocken (1877–1959), who immigrated to Jerusalem in 1934. In September 1938, Schocken presented the album as a thank-you gift to the well-wishers who marked his 60th birthday the previous year. That same year, Mr. S. Margolin dedicated a similar album to his friend Dr. A. Brunner; it contained 29 photographs, of which some are identical to the Schocken album. Kluger’s unique photographs are a journey through thousands of years of biblical landscapes and half a century of Zionist activity in Palestine. Most of the photographs are devoted to the history of settlement and construction in the Yishuv, the Jewish community in Palestine prior to the declaration of the state of Israel in 1948. The albums begin with the foundation of Petah Tikva and Rishon Letzion in the late 19th century, through the first kibbutzim and moshavim, and the architectural development of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa. They end with the overnight construction of the Tower and Stockade settlements, which were built after the Arab revolt in 1936.Zoltan Kluger served as an aerial photographer in the Austro-Hungarian army during the First World War. At the end of the 1920s he came to Berlin, where he worked as a freelance photojournalist and successfully collaborated with Nachman Schifrin (1893–1984), the owner of Presse Photo GmbH. After they were banned from practicing their profession in Nazi Germany, both men immigrated to Palestine, where they founded the Tel Aviv-based Orient Press Photo Company in November 1933.During the first decade after Israel’s independence, Kluger was one of the busiest photojournalists in the country, through his work for Keren Hayesod and Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael–Jewish National Fund (KKL–JNF) . In 1958, he left Israel and went to live in the United States. His photographs are preserved in various archives in Israel. In 2008, the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv mounted an exhibition called “Zoltan Kluger, Chief Photographer, 1933–1958, which presented the broad spectrum of his work (curators: Dr. Ruth Oren, Guy Raz). The comparison to contemporary Instagram culture arises from the recognition that the two albums from the 1930s, just like today’s social media, aim to impress their audience with the help of spectacular photos that serve a particular agenda.Kluger’s photographs extol Zionist history: the landscapes, the inhabitants, and the “agricultural redemption of the land.” In both albums, the Arab presence in the country is mostly ignored. Our exhibition shows the Schocken album digitally, whereas the original Margolin album is presented on the spot for the first time ever.Exhibition curator: Dr. Ines Sonder, architectural historian and research associate at the Moses Mendelssohn Center, University of Potsdam, Germany]]>

Exhibition Opening in Berlin: Cooperation With ‘Freiraum Berlin’ Galleryhttps://bauhaus-center.com/tel-aviv-berlin-bauhaus-photography/ Tue, 16 Jul 2019 09:55:11 +0000 https://bauhaus-center.com/?p=2735

How do we want to live? This question was of eminent importance for a new, democratic society emerging in Berlin in the 1920s and 1930s – and today, we are asking the same question again. The Bauhaus Center is proud to present a new exhibition that displays the manifestations of Modernism (and Bauhaus in particular) in Berlin and Tel Aviv, in cooperation with the Freiraum Berlin gallery.

Back in the early 20th century, the (visual) ideas of Modernism and Bauhaus in particular, developed a concept for a new way of living together. Developed by architects, artists, designers, philosophers, the breakthrough materialized in Berlin only in limited scope, as society was not ready for the new aesthetic and approach.

But a few years later in Tel Aviv, 4000 explicitly modern objects were created in an architectonic manifestation of the new, open, social society. Built in the image of European modernism, Tel Aviv became a powerful demonstration of an alliance between the new and the old, the combination of renewal and tradition. Until today, the White City stands for the re-interpretation of the past in a thoroughly modern way – an epitome also of the title of Herzl’s book Altneuland.

The Bauhaus Center Team is happy to cooperate with the Freiraum Berlin Gallery for this new exhibition with photographs by Jean Molitor. A beautiful display of the Modernism ideas - and Bauhaus architecture in particular - exiled from Germany in the 20th century, an idea with such a massive impact around the world and especially in Tel Aviv.

During the summer months the exhibition is on display in Box Freiraum Berlin Gallery, and we are looking forward to hosting the Jean Molitor exhibition BAUHAUS AND MODERNISM IN BERLIN AND TEL AVIV in our Bauhaus Center Gallery later in 2019. In 1926, the legendary Tel Aviv photographer Avraham Soskin published the album "Tel Aviv Views". The album included about eighty pages of photos. Soskin juxtaposed the earliest photos of the sands against the same locales twenty years later. Ron Erde continues Soskin's thinking in a documentary that compares the "then" and the "now". Erde's photos may not be as pretty or romantic as Soslkin's, but they show us the same places 100 years later. The show consists of 27 panels.Curator: Guy Raz.Languages: English and HebrewA book published by us accompanies the exhibition (English/German/Hebrew).Photography by Avraham Soskin and Ran Erde.

Since the Middle Ages, Jews have been actively involved in the culture of Europe. In addition to Prague, they settled in some of the smaller towns in its environs. In what is now the Central Bohemia Region, there remain close to twenty former Jewish ghettos, about sixty Jewish cemeteries and more than fifty synagogues. Many of these objects have been restored to their former glory.‬ ‏‪The exhibition includes 25 panels with photos and texts about historical places in “Jewish Bohemia” and known personalities of former Jewish life in this region. A one hour DVD exploring the Jewish heritage in this area is presented as well.‬ ‏‪]]>
